The Sony VAIO® Y Series laptop is known for its high ultra-portability quotient. With an Intel® Core Duo processor and an integrated 4500 MHD graphics accelerator, the laptop is a high performance system that is known for its long battery life (up to 12 hours with extension). It also has an HDMI port that allows you to connect the notebook to a TV for an unbelievable cinematic experience. The video card that comes integrated with the Sony VAIO® Y Series generates and displays the pictures and videos on the screen. So, if you want a better display, you can upgrade the video card. The following procedure tells you how to go about doing this:
- Uninstallation of the old card
- Inserting the new card
- Installing the drivers
Uninstallation of the old card
First of all, you need to purchase a new video card which you are going to use to upgrade your system with. While browsing the Internet you can get the list of cards available for your model. You can choose them from the Sony® website or discuss about this in forums. Before you install the new card, you have to uninstall the old video card and the related drivers. To do this, just go to ‘My computer’. Click ‘Properties’. Choose ‘Hardware’. Now click ‘Device Manager’. Click ‘Display Adaptor’ and then right click the video card and uninstall it.
Inserting the new card
Shut down your system, unplug it and remove the processor panel. Locate the video card. You can do this easily by locating the card to which the video wire connection leads. Remove the video card carefully without damaging any other parts. You need to unscrew the card holder. Then insert the new card. Make sure that it fits properly into the holder. Now close the panel and reconnect the power cord. Now switch on your system.
You now need to install the appropriate drivers for the new card that you have inserted. This is because, since the video card is upgraded, the old drivers will no longer work. That is why you uninstalled the drivers in the first place. Usually, the video driver comes along with the new card. You can insert the CD into the drive and proceed as per the instructions on the CD. Installing the drivers is a very simple task. In case you don’t have the CD, you can download compatible drivers for your new video card. However remember that drivers are operating system specific. So download appropriate drivers for your card and operating system.
