Reasons for sudden shutdown Sony VAIO® Y Series laptop
We know that the voltage coming from the AC adapter is almost twenty volts. The processors used by Sony VAIO® Y Series laptop work with around two to three volts. This is done mainly to reduce thermal loss. This implies that the voltage from the adapter has to be reduced in order to be fed to the processor. This procedure is called stabilization. This stabilization is done by eleven capacitors. These capacitors tend to lose their capacitance value due to ageing and thermal exposure this leads to heating. There will be an internal safety device in the processor. The duty of this device is to inform the operating system regarding overheating of the processor. Thus, when the processor is excessively heated, the laptop shuts down.
No such problems in safe mode
It is interesting to note that if the Sony VAIO® Y Series laptop in installed with Windows® 98 or Linux and if the laptop is in safe mode, then it will never encounter this kind of situation because in safe mode there is a facility known as Advanced Power Management. It includes an ACPI device known as Advanced Configuration and Power Interface. In safe mode, some of its features are disabled, which prevents shutdowns from taking place suddenly.
The reasons for the shutdowns in Sony VAIO® Y Series laptop mainly depends upon the operating system used in it. There are hardware and software solutions for this issue. If the defective hardware parts of the laptop are replaced, then the problem is avoided. This must be done manually following the instructions of the iYogi tech support. Dealing with the software, if the ACPI functions are disabled then the laptop will work fine and will never encounter such problems of sudden shutdown.
