However problems do arise with the Sony VAIO® Y Series screen, and some of those issues are mentioned below along with their solutions.
- Brightness of the screen cannot be controlled
- Abrupt horizontal or vertical lines
- No display
Brightness of the screen cannot be controlled
Sometimes the brightness controls might stop working. Screen flickering might become common and if the brightness is too high, it may use all the battery power on your system. To sort out this issue, try locating the file /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness. Add +w to this file for you to be able to write. Now you can write an allowed value of brightness to the file. As a simple try, press and hold the FN key and press down key repeatedly to decrease the brightness.
Abrupt horizontal or vertical lines
This is a common problem that can come with the screens of laptops. When you are watching a movie or reading a document, suddenly thick or thin horizontal or vertical lines may start appearing on the screen. This can be due to many reasons, but if it appears often, then the problem is with the driver. See to it that your video card driver is not outdated or incompatible. If it is, then visit the Sony® website and update your drivers accordingly. Check your BIOS settings too.
If the Sony VAIO® Y Series screen is blank or doesn’t display anything, check the laptop for problems by connecting an external monitor. The Sony VAIO® Y Series comes with a VGA connector which you can use for connecting an external monitor. If the external monitor doesn’t show up, check your power cord. Ensure that the laptop is getting enough power. Connect the power cord properly or check the electrical outlet. If the external monitor displays the desktop, there is a serious problem with your laptop screen. Contact Sony for support.
