Windows does not start and shows error message at the boot time
It is a serious problem that Windows does not start and after booting, a message such as “Invalid boot.ini” or “Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WindowsSystem32Hal.dll” is displayed. This occurs for missing or corruption of the boot.ini file. To recover this, set up the BIOS to boot from CD. Insert the Windows XP installation CD and boot from that CD. When the “Welcome to setup” screen appears, press ‘R’ to run the recovery console. When requested, give the administrator password and press ‘Enter’. The command prompt will open. Type “bootcfg /list” and press ‘Enter’, entries of boot.ini will appear. Type “bootcfg /rebuild” and ‘Enter’, some message will appear like “Add installation to boot list”, press ‘Enter’, then “Enter load identifier”, type “Microsoft Windows XP Professional”, then for “Enter OS Load options”, type “/fastdetect” and press ‘Enter’. At last type “exit” and press ‘Enter’ key. The boot.ini is rebuilt and the system will restart.
Your laptop restarts by itself
This problem may occur both for software and hardware reasons. To solve the software problem, at first you have to first identify whether actually it is hardware problem or software problem. To do this, your Sony VAIO RS series laptop has its own built-in-diagnostics which can bypass Windows. By running this, you can check your system configuration. Again to be sure, you can get ultimate boot CD or download from Internet and make a boot up CD. Then run your system from this CD for at least a day. If the system does not restart then it is a software problem. Then you should update your device drivers. If there is no improvement, try installing a new copy of XP. For hardware problem, contact your hardware provider.
