Always make sure that you are using the cables without any defects. It is better to avoid cable extenders as it could reduce the quality. Try the cable which is long enough to fix with the port. There are also chances for dust particles sticking on to your cable .So make sure that it is free from dirt. You could also choose a self test screen in order to test for the performance.
You need to make sure that you are connecting to the proper port. There are different ports implemented on to the back of the laptop. So be careful while connecting to the port. Pins of the ports have major important role while connecting. The ports should have at least 15 pins. Do not get confused with the two different ports (VGA, DVI) located to the back of the monitor. Also make sure that the pins are not broken.
Avoid interacting with mobile phones and other high frequency devices in front of the external monitor. These devices could transmit high radiations and make the image blurred. It not only affects the quality of the display but also damages the system screen. Some speakers could also reduce the picture quality. So make sure that these devices are away from your system.
