Save the copy of the files in two places
When you back up the data, make sure that you are saving the files in at least two places. Otherwise, your data may be at risk because often the users delete their files assuming that they are backed up. An important thing to be kept in mind while you back up is that at once you backup your data to an external drive. By doing so, you are left with only a single copy of your files. So, this must be avoided.
Back up the required files only
You should never back up all the files in your system. Always back up only the most important files that are unavoidable. You can back up them either at C:UsersUsername for Windows 7 or Windows Vista, or C:Documents and Settings for Windows XP. All your documents, settings, data folders etc must be in this location. In this, you should include all the folders that you have created in other hard drives as well.
You can always backup your files in any trustable online source. But you should be aware that your data is with someone else. Online backup is preferred only when you have very few files to backup. Even though it is helpful, restoring these files can take extremely long time as you will have to download all of them again.
