Sony® online Free Realms pulls 20M gamers
Free Realms, the multiplayer online game developed by Sony Online Entertainment, has managed to have 20 million registered users since it was launched in 2009. Though Sony has never disclosed its monthly users, but this huge number shows the popularity of the online game.
This game is set in a fantasy world named Sacred Grove. It is designed for PC, Mac, and PlayStation and is free to play, which means that the users can play for free and pay money for virtual goods like decoration items or weapons. This is one of the reasons that the game has become so popular since its launch.
Though it is free to play, but without membership a user cannot exceed level four.
Free Realms features a bunch of minigames, adventures, and other game play activities. It caters to a large target audience, including teens. John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment, said that 1 million users had signed up for Free Realms within 18 days after its launch.
Free Realms offers optional membership for single users. It allows three characters to be created per account with other additional benefits. But in the coming times, a family membership will be offered that will allow multiple logins.
In a quest to attract more users, Sony continues to improve its online game. And those who log in from Oct. 21 to Oct. 31 would receive a special promotional in-game varsity letterman jacket.
The game was first launched on April 29, 2009 for Windows PC. The Mac version was released on November 2, 2010, and the PlayStation 3 version was released on March 29, 2011 on the U.S. PlayStation Store.
